I liked how informative the audio guide was, however some of the sections did not match the experience, for example the audio guide told you to go instead when on this day you could not enter the villas.

Pompeii was so far the best highlight on my trip. It was worth it every penny spent on the ticket. I'd definitely recommend doing the tour to anyone. Not very good for kids though.
Great day exploring two very unique UNESCO historical archealogical sites as part of our honeymoon in Italy! We started at the Herculaneum first thing in the morning and were among the first visitors for the day. This was awesome as we avoided lots of crowds and school groups as we explored the ruins and followed our own self guided tour. The preservation of the artefacts was phenomenal and we were able to see active digging/restoration as we explored. We then went to Pompeii in the afternoon and again enjoyed a walk through history following a self-guided audio tour through the ancient city. We weren't able to skip-the-line at Pompeii as advertised by the booking and had to join the general queue to get out tickets from the voucher. We drove to both sites and parking was easily found - even in the afternoon when it was quite busy at Pompeii.
I did the Pompeii guided tour on Monday 19 May, Our Guide Giuseppe was fabulous - he was obviously passionate about roman history and passed on his knowledge in a friendly, fun manner. After the tour ended I stayed in the park to the end of the day and Giuseppe's tour helped with the rest of my sightseeing afternoon. Thankyou Giuseppe 🙏❤️
The ticket collection can be confusing but ones you are in the correct line all went well. The site itself was amazing which we spent 6hrs taking in.
We loved everything. The shopping experience was easy and simple, what should be improved especially in this kind of places is the entrance. It doesn't make much sense to buy online and then wait in line if there is even a QR code. Other than that, perfect.

The architecture of Pompeii for its time was so modern and ahead of its time. I loved learning about its history and experience all of the atmosphere and embrace its beauty. Getting the tickets was so easy and the site was amazing to see.
Pompeii was an awesome exprience. I did not expect how huge and well precerved the Pompeii was. Our guide Renaldo was the best you can get. So full of interesting stories and knowledge. If possible in the future, we Will comeback back. Really a lifetime experience.
Did the 12:30 PM afternoon tour and it was a lot less crowded than I anticipated. Our tour guide covered all the basics. And provided time for us to go back and explore on our own.
A herculanum super experience We received our tickets by e-mail the day before and were able to go straight in. In Pompeii, however, we had to queue up again at the cash desk to transform our mail pass into a ticket with a qr code. It took us 1 hour

Fantastic place, walking the streets of a Roman town was amazing. The audio guide was very informative, so much to see so be selective!
What a great tour, very informative and our guide was very knowledgeable regarding the history of Pompeii. Being part of a tour allowed us to avoid some lines as well.
Pompeii is an impressive place. The audio guide explanations are very good. Too bad we couldn't see the amphitheater.

You can't get in without queuing because you have to collect your tickets on site, but it was still okay. The Plus Ticket was good for the additional opportunity to see the Mystery Villa for the really impressive murals, the Archeologicum was unfortunately closed. It makes sense to plan a whole day to visit the excavations, including arrival and departure, comfortable shoes are also highly recommended. The archaeological finds from Pompeii are best seen in the National Museum in Naples.

The sight itself is stunning! However, I planned to buy a ticket to Pompeji online, but I was not able to do that. I had to buy a voucher and once there I was supposed to queue up and exchange the voucher for a ticket. Why?
Ticketing was good. Screen a bit difficult to see in the sun and location indicator didn't work. Maybe better with headphones to hear explanation. Possibly next time would choose a guide to accompany
Visiting Pompeii was a fantastic experience! Everything went smoothly, though, as expected, it was quite crowded with tourists. However, the journey from Naples was memorable – the train ride was made special by an accordionist playing traditional Italian music, and the passengers clapping along. I’m not sure if this happens all the time, but it added a lovely touch to the trip. Naples itself is vibrant, with delicious food and plenty to see. Pompeii is a treasure trove of history, offering stunning sights perfect for photos and an incredible opportunity to learn about the past. Highly recommended!
Pompeii was great and was good to have tickets in advance, though still had to queue to redeem. We opt out for tickets without the guide as we like to go at our own pace, but one day was not enough for us to see everything, and maybe next time we get the guide as well to learn more. Visit to archaeology museum is a must as well as many frescoes are on display there.
The history and ability to walk about freely with the audio tour guide perfectly suited our needs. We could go at our own pace and our own destinations within the city. If I can do it over again, I would bring more snacks and drinks to help along the hike, as well as headphones to help with the audio tour. Otherwise, you have to hold the audio guide up to your ear like a phone.
The site of Pompeï and Herculaneum were impressive and a must do when you visit Naples or like us, Rome. You really get the feeling when you walk around, what it would be like to live in that time and with the Vesuvius constant in your sight... it is just horrifiyng to imagine what happend almost 2000 years ago
Ticket issue worked well. However, it would be desirable if you could pick up the tickets the day before, that would certainly save an hour's lead time on the day of the visit!!! You should also definitely book the "Pompei plus" ticket, otherwise you won't see the villas a bit outside and that would be an extreme shame!!!

Herculaneum is, as everyone told us, wonderful. Pompeii is so big and busy that it's quite tiring. But it was well worth it. We are from the UK and we have Roman remains at home, but nothing like this. Herculaneum is easy to access and the antiquarium is great. There are places to sit and just take it all in, whereas Pompeii is more full-on. The tickets worked well.
The history of this place is impressive, and I learned many more details and being there is an unforgettable experience because we could admire the greatness of the city that was and how they lived.

Our tour guide Rrrrrrrrosanna, was very engaging, knowledgeable and easy to understand, which made our tour one of the highlights of our holiday. Would definitely recommend anyone to go on this guided tour if going to Pompeii!
The archaeologist guide brought Pompeii to life with riveting and informative explanations. Everything flowed well, and all of the information was digestible. We got to see and learn about many of the interesting areas of Pompeii, and we were given extra advice for things we could explore on our own.
The guide's explanations were very interesting. I emphasize how important it is that the guides are updated on the latest findings. In addition, the funny comments enlivened the speech.

leading up to the start the organization was a bit messy and chaotic, I think because several tours in different languages had the same start time, but really could have been more efficient. Went really on his "talian" shall we say. Our guide was very experienced and good. He knew how to tell fun and informative stories and through his narration Pompeii really came alive and you got a good understanding of life in this city. Without a guide you really would have had no idea of this without extensive literature study beforehand. Really glad we booked this tour, enjoyed it.

First time in Pompeii, I chose a guided tour and it was a very good choice. Paolo, our guide, made us appreciate the beauty of the place and, during the two-hour tour, he was very engaging and, with historical tales and anecdotes, made us relive the society of the time. He also gave us the tools to recognize the basic elements of Roman architecture, which were useful to continue exploring the excavations on our own.

The guide's archaeological skills are a real plus. Top-notch. And of course the exceptional beauty of the site and its level of preservation.

I recommend to all visitors to take the 2 hour tour of Pompeii with the agency ASKOS Tour, especially with the guide Diego, an archaeologist by profession, is a blast! His explanation is clear, light, with depth and mastery of the city and history. It was a rainy day and it was not a problem, he knew how to make the most appropriate and comfortable route while showing us the interesting and relevant places. We have been extremely satisfied and happy with this great experience. I recommend you all! Thank you Diego!

The line to redeem the ticket was very long because there was no QR code. I still had to wait in the same line as if I were buying a paper ticket.
There was little point in booking a ticket in advance as I still had to queue for half an hour alongside those purchasing tickets on the day which meant I only had two hours at the site due to my schedule
Booked tickets in advance, read everywhere Popmpei would take around two hours. Ended up spending the entire afternoon there, never got to Herculaneum. Also rather silly they make you stand in line to switch online ticket to paper ticket. Makes booking ahead only useful if tickets would be sold out, which they werent.
The visit went very well. Regarding the management, it has caused me initial confusion not to find the tickets together with the reservation number. Although finally there was no problem, I think it would be appropriate to explain the process on a case by case basis, and to know if at the ticket office it is enough to provide the reservation number or the ticket, as the case may be. Thank you!

It should have been a simple procedure. I had to que up for the tickets when I should have had them sent electronically to my phone.
I was expecting to Skip the line. But at the entrance we had to queue up, in a line that was closed. Then when we got in had to queue again to get the actual tickets. So, rather than skipping the line...you end up in 2lines.
Pompeii is something very special. What I didn't like at all, although I didn't have to wait when I ordered, I still had to queue at the cash desk to exchange my voucher for a ticket. Question: Why did I buy a ticket online? Explain to me what this is all about

Last minutes changes put ne in a bit of a rush. Appreciate that they accomodate and wait for my arrival to start. Micheal the guide/archeologist was a fountain of knowledge, he made it all well worth it. Both Pompeii and Ercolano are well worth visiting.
The driving was perfect. The guiding was fun and everything perfect apart from that the guide went forward at one time with only half of the group. Luckily it was possible to call one of those who left with her to find out where to go! What we didn't like is that the tour was advertised to start with a pick up at 7:30 but didn't start until 55 minutes later. We only got to know that the tour was to start at 8:30 when another group was picked up from the same company around 8:10. After waiting 40 minutes.
Roberta was a brilliant guide - super friendly, knowledgeable and managed our group well. We definitely recommend this tour to anyone wanting to explore Pompeii for two hours with a guide. And the transfer to Pompeii from Naples and from Pompeii to Naples was very prompt, handy and simple - just be sure to show up to the transfer on time as they leave right on time!
The entire experience was great! We were picked up by bus, got to see Pompeii and Vesuvius, got something good to eat along the way and were supported by our great guide Daniel and our busdriver. The guide was informative and pleasant. The audio was necessary due to the large size of the group. The group size was too large and entry was chaotic. The promise that we would skip the line was false. It took more than a hour to reach the entrance and only half of the group made it through. We purchased the option to go to Vesuvius but were too delayed by the chaos to make it. People not in our group were pressing upon us. It was dangerously crowded. At the end of the day the train line had a mechanical problem and over 1000 people had accumulated at the station. No one could tell us how to get back to Sorrento.

Rosana, an archaeologist, is an excellent and professional Pompeii guide. She showed us the ancient city, which was buried by Vesuvius almost 2,000 years ago, in an exciting, entertaining and knowledgeable way. We will definitely be back, as we were very impressed by the excavations, you need more than one day to see everything and the excavations have not yet been completed.

We learned more in the first 30 min about pompeii than we wouldve learned with an audio guide in 4 hours
The tour was fantastic. The guide Rossana was attentive, engaging and knowledgeable. A strong recommendation!
Frederica, our guide was amazing! We had a great visit, and highly recommend the tour.
Our guide was brilliant. Absolutely new the detail you would expect from an archiologist. Conducted visit at our pace whilst ensuring we saw key parts. Going early gave us more space as well.
Super Guide (Roberta). Extraordinary knowledge of the site and its history. She made the visit very lively and informative.

Francesa was vey knowledgable and made the experience so interesting. Despite the torrential rain, we had an amazing time, understanding the history of Pompeii. I would highly recommend the private tour.
Fantastic tour with Vincenzo and the highlight of our time in Pompeii. He took us to less crowded parts of the city and his descriptions really brought the areas we visited to life. As an archaeologist he had knowledge of facts that other tour guides would not know and also had a sense of humour. The 2 hour tour went by in a flash and we were really disappointed when the tour ended, although he did give us a few tips for our self guided continuing tour of some of the areas we did not have the time to see with him. Overall an extremely interesting tour, not rushed and well worth the cost.
This was a great tour of Pompei and our guide did a great job of explaining the highlights in a short period of time. Had no trouble meeting him!
Very charming guide, personable and attentive to each of us, taking time to answer our questions. She was knowledgeable about our site and provided interesting details. It was a private tour for 4, well worth it!

Christian may be the best bus driver in the world! My guy has got skills, not only did he get us there and back I was so impressed I just had to tip him 20 Euro for a safe travel day! Mara was incredible, friendly and outgoing, she was extremely knowledgeable not only about destinations but sites along the way. She enhanced the ride by providing us music that was born from the locations she was telling us about giving us a deeper appreciation for the entire country of Italy and not just our paid destination spots! I would definitely recommend these two together if you're lucky enough to get them!
We have fantastic time visiting all the places organising everything online was easy and no problem great to be picked up and dropped back to city the attractions were amazing also the scenery and weather which helped the experience too 👍100%
We choose the tour solely because it stated 3 hours in Pompeii. In total the stop was 2 hours and 15 min was gone because the guide had to collect the tickets so we ran around in 1.45 min trying to see some highlights my husband had wanted to see for over 40 years so quite a disappointment.
Nothing. And was incorrect. Three hours in Pompeii was two w/contractor and was 1.5 when we arrived. I paid for priority but operator didn't know what that was. And tour operated waited 45 mins for late people in Sorrento before leaving w/o them. Your operator took half hour more with his tour and with all the lateness we ended up not doing the tasting. Very disappointed after doing so much homework for tour.
Very good organization, bus on time and clean, nice bus driver. One stop each on the way there and back. We had only booked the bus trip with entrance tickets and still got good tips from the tour guide on board, as well as during the trip in English and Spanish. We hired an audio guide on site for 10 euros and off we went. About 3.5 hours on site!

Highly recommend this tour! The bus ride to and from was smooth and the staff are very kind. Samuel was the leader for my bus/tour and he was amazing. Stopped at a giftshop/cafe when we left Rome and on or way back. Very friendly and helpful. I got stuck in the store in Pompeii when we were supposed to leave and he went back to the site just to get me so I could find the bus and not be left! We had about four hours of time to walk around (I did not do a tour guide, I walked around freely) and I didn't see everything but it is a huge city so it's not a big deal. Very good experience and zero complaints!
Plenty of time to explore the site... We hadn't booked lunch or an audioguide, but it was flexible and we could add those extras on the day. Our guide was so friendly and helpful. We loved it!
Real tips from real people who’ve been there, done that!

In this case, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and articulate. It would be foolish to visit such places as Pompeii without such a person as we would not always know what we were looking at - too, we would have missed so much. The map we were given was helpful too.

I would recommended a guided tour for two main reasons. First, the guide encouraged the group to ask questions and he was able answer every question asked. Second, because the city is so large, it isn't possible to see everything during the two hour tour. The guide pointed out and recommended areas and buildings to see after our tour was completed.

Information is so helpful. Guide highlighted the best and most interesting parts of the town . Without a guide we would have found it too overwhelming and may have missed the best bits/ relevant information. I think you could go back with an audio guide , but for a first visit I think a guided tour is the best way to see Pompei. After the tour you are free to walk round afterwards so it is the best of both worlds.

Having a guide gave us such a lot of information and insights we were able to carry on after the tour with a much better perspective on everything around us. I suggest getting there as early as possible and definitely buy either skip-the-line tickets in advance or book a tour. The daily limit of visitors is 20.000 and that can mean a loooooong wait in line. If you're choosing Headout, please note that when you get to the meeting point, there is no flag with their logo. We had a very, very stressfull 20 minutes trying to figure out who our guide is or where we are supposed to go. The information desk was not helpful and despite there being a 24/7 customer support, no one was answering the phone. We had to contact the AI assistant and we had to ask about 5 people on the parking lot before we got to the right one. When I purchased the tickets, it also said we need to be punctual (i.e. 15 minutes before the tour starts) or we'd not be able to get inside. The tour actually started with almost a half hour delay. I also booked a tour with an acheologist (which our guide Marco was and he was brilliant) and for a group of max 20 people. That didn't happen, there were over 30 of us. I have issues with my hearing so it was hard for me to follow what the guide was saying in the begining, especially in the throng of people at the entrance (where we also waited for about 20 minutes, so skip-the-line does not mean no-wait). I made sure to be as close to our guide as possible, so I had a good radio connection with him, but the people in the back were quickly out of range and could not hear him well over the radio which for sure made them miss valuable and interesting information.

Get to Pompeii a bit earlier if you travel on you own and not with an agency transport, because there are a lot of tours and guides starting from there, so you might need some time to find the right one, try to get there approximately one hour earlier than the actual tour starts. Also hats, plenty of drinking water and comfortable nonslip shoes are a must.

We visited in April, perfect time of the year with 24 degrees Celsius it was not necessary to wear a hat or carry lots of bottles of water. If you visit in summer please do wear a hat and take a lot of water with you as temperatures may rise to 35 degrees or more! Pompeii is a very busy place, so if you don't skip the line, reserve extra time for this, 30 minutes at least. If you take a tour with a guide, meeting him/her is in front of the main entrance, address is Villa Dei Misteri 1 (not 2 as sometimes stated in communication).

We went at 10.10 tour, but it didn't depart until 10.30 (after requesting guest arrive at 9.55am. Wearing comfortable shoes is important due to rocks and cobblestones- and 2 hours of walking and standing. No access during the tour for bathroom so be prepared for that.

If I were to do it again as independent travelers, I would have considered grabbing a backpack, taken that off-schedule train from Rome, taken the tour, wandered until sunset, and stayed at a nearby hotel, and returned to Rome the following day.

It's a popular and busy site. With a guide - best parts can be seen in a few hours. Self guided and queue for entry would likely need the best part of a day. There's a lovely picnic area - you can bring your own snacks in. Very little protection from the elements- be prepared for the weather conditions.
Brian Moore

Ensure you get there in good time. A lot easier by train and there is a connecting bus from the station to the site. Make sure you have some strong walk shoes/boots
Melinda Stenger
Nov 2024
1. Get there early! 2. park at a nearby restaurant and eat lunch there then parking is free. 3. be prepared for all types of weather - it rained and we had umbrellas and the tour continued without the crowds!

We entered Pompei at noon. Maybe in the morning there are fewer visitors and the atmosphere is even more authentic.

You will want to explore more after the tour ends. If you leave Pompeii at 5 when it closes all of the gift shops will already be closed. Get an archaeologist guide! Take lots of pictures and notes to revisit.

Book a tour with an archeologist, absolutely the best way to see Pompeii Wear comfy shoes Read about Pompeii before you go There are a number of cafes outside the site so its easy to have a lunch or snack after your tour

Wear comfortable clothes and prepare to walk some distance. We visited on a warm day at the end of October and struggled to find any shade - in summer, be sure to take protection against the sun and heat.

plan out train schedule, almost missed mine because of it. expect to walk alot give some time post tour to explore its worth it.

The walking area is quite rocky and uneven. We were very glad to have our walking sticks. No matter the temperature you need water.
Thomas Rodgers
Oct 2024
We booked the 1.00 tour and as it was October the weather was cooler and better for walking around. Its not something I would like to do.in the height of summer.
Sylvia Veranneman
Oct 2024
Go with a guide and try to see the priorities because impossible to see it all Make enough time if you visit on your own Take a bottle of water and a small umbrella (against sun or rain)
Liz Bond
Oct 2024
We were lucky to visit on a day when there were no cruise ships in the bay so it was less crowded. We had a tour in the morning and stayed until the site closed at 7, and there was still so much to see- don't expect to cover everything. Booking a tour in the morning gives you a really good basis for exploring on your own afterwards.
Conor Fitzpatrick

Wear comfortable walking shoes. Download the Pompeii app in advance and review where you would like to go after the tour. There is not much cover so prepare for the weather.

It was good to have time after the tour to take a break and then walk round other parts of the town. Having a guide really brings everything alive.

On arrival by train you are made to feel you have to buy tickets there - but actually you can at the gate. We were there in October and there were no queues.

Book in advance and do a bit of a research. The train will be PACKED so travel light, but there is a luggage storage option at the station. Wear comfy shoes!

Wear comfortable shoes and clothes, the tour is only for 2 hrs but you can spend more time in the place to explore.
Lorraine McCaig
Oct 2024
Definitely take the train, the transport links are fantastic and station is right by the Marina entrance. Take a bottle of water as there is little shade Book on to a tour, we found a 2 hour tour was ample, we then had the pleasure of being able to explore afterwards on our own - which we enjoyed just as much
Ana Isabel Mijares Bejerano

Vincenzo was our guide and he did it perfectly. Professional, good informaton and far away of oher guides who treat people as kids. We really enjoy his explanations.

THe info in advance said no bags or backpacks allowed but everyone had a small personal handbag or backpack only large suitcases or large hiking backpacks wasn´t allowed. A more acurate information could had allowed us to bring maybe a small snack one of us has diabetes and when the tour was over his energy and insulin level was way to low a fruit or simular could had avoided that

Sep 2024
The train from Garibaldi to Pompeii requires the Circumvesuviana line. Very easy quick and cheap to use. 25mins ish journey. In warmer months advised to take a bottle of water in with you as you'll be doing a lot of walking and not that much shade about. Highly recommend a guided tour to get the most out of the visit...you'll learn a lot!!!

Eat before the tour. If going in the summer, wear comfortable shoes, and water possibly. The lines for food and drink are long and expensive. Plan something to do after the tour. Pompeii is a small town outside of the site, and I only spent three hours there.
Darby Bronson
Sep 2024
The place is incredible and very big. In this tour you only cover half of it , so if you want to allow more time to stay and explore more on your own, we highly recommend it. Bring an umbrella or ponchos just in case of inclement weather.
Klaus K. D. Kattenhoej
Sep 2024
Parring should have been suggested close to meeting point. We Walker 2km to get to entrance. Discounted parring Which could be reserved upfront could be a Treat. Why dont Askos Try to upsell idle spots on Napels wonders or visiting vesuv at a 20% discount, if idle placer left for early starters after the ruin and free Extra Parkinsons time.

Park at Zeus since it is so close to the entrance. Also can take the train as there is a stop right there as well. Definitely book a tour so you will learn some history and know what you are looking at.

Try to time the train as best as possible from Napoli. Use the bathroom before the tour starts Take water Enjoy!

Sep 2024
Be early. They start the tour early if everyone is there. Don't go to the toilet if they say you have time - you don't. Watch for where the tour guide is. If you have the little ticket voucher then when you go through keep walking past the glass booth you will see the turnstiles. This wasn't clear to us.
Mike Lay
Sep 2024
They tell you to meet at a specific address, but there is a lot of stuff going on at that location. They need to tell you to "come up to the second floor in the red building that is right down the street from the entrance."
Petya Petkova
Sep 2024
Plan a whole day in Pompeii, you can stay and explore after the tour is complete. I didn't know this and had other plans after it. 2 hours in Pompeii is not nearly enough.
kerry ann cleaver

Make sure to arrive earlier than expected. Take lots of water, wear appropriate footwear - the amount of flip flops is mad. And watch your step, a woman fell and hit her head on a step in our group, it's of course not going to be an easy explore, so wear the right things

Do a small group guided tour. And we recommend Franchesco, Franki if possible. His english is easy to understand, he is funny and he is deeply interested in the subjects he talks about. And he really takes his time to make sure that everybody is on the same page as him. No rush.

We hired scooters so we had autonomy on arrival and departure which was a challenge but achievable. Take a LOT if water and a fan if possible as was a very hot day. Sneakers were essential as terrain was rough/bumpy most of the way. Jandals/sandals not recommended.
Jeanette Williamson
Sep 2024
Take plenty of water with you or buy an iced bottled from the shop close by as it was only 1euro50. Comfortable walking shoes as lots of uneven cobble stones. Allow plenty of time to travel to the venue as traffic was busy. Definitely eat in the restaurant as you come out of the exit from Pompeii. We had a great meal there and they were so helpful and friendly.
Agnieszka Klimek-Cheba

Get in the meeting point 30-20 minutes prior to the tour starts, there are plenty of huge, organized tours around, lots of people passing by every minute so additional time might be needed to get to your guide.

Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Get there early if you need to store bags or grab something to eat. Make sure to leave yourself time after the tour to continue exploring before you have to leave the area. There is so much more to see if you take the time to walk around.

Several people in the group has some additional questions that were answered properly by the guide - therefore I would prefer a guided tour, certainly when the guide shows such great knowledge
Steven Nockels

We could ask our guide questions about what we were seeing, which was a plus on an audio guide. After our tour, we could then explore the site on our own.
John Russell
Apr 2025
The guide makes the tour much more personable and you puck up much more than tour would from just an audio guide
Lynn Zamarra
Apr 2025
In this case, our guide was extremely knowledgeable and articulate. It would be foolish to visit such places as Pompeii without such a person as we would not always know what we were looking at - too, we would have missed so much. The map we were given was helpful too.
Lynn Anne Long
Apr 2025
I would recommended a guided tour for two main reasons. First, the guide encouraged the group to ask questions and he was able answer every question asked. Second, because the city is so large, it isn't possible to see everything during the two hour tour. The guide pointed out and recommended areas and buildings to see after our tour was completed.
Katarína Tripská

Our guide was knowledgeable and able to provide commentary (and humour!) that I think an audio guide may have skipped over. It's such a huge site that I think it would be difficult to navigate without a guide.

Feb 2025
Information is so helpful. Guide highlighted the best and most interesting parts of the town . Without a guide we would have found it too overwhelming and may have missed the best bits/ relevant information. I think you could go back with an audio guide , but for a first visit I think a guided tour is the best way to see Pompei. After the tour you are free to walk round afterwards so it is the best of both worlds.

You won't be able to get a broad understanding or the storytelling aspect as you walk through Pompeii. Since it's so big, much bigger than a museum let's say, and so physical, it was worth the guided tour.

See previous comments. Pompeii is a vast site and could be overwhelming to walk round. Having a guide gave us such a lot of information and insights we were able to carry on after the tour with a much better perspective on everything around us. The tour brought so much to life and enabled us to have a real emotional connection with the citizens of the town at the time of the eruption.

I wanted to make the most of my time there. While I would have loved to take 4-6 hours to experience it all at a leisurely pace, I knew it would be hot and wanted to learn more from an archeologist.

We booked the tour the night before, online, easy process. We took the train from Sorrento, not the express train, €2.8 each, easy process, although train was busy, about a 30min journey. Tour office is next to the station and everything went very easy to record the fact we'd arrived.

Being part of a guided tour was great but be prepared to wait for start of tour. We waited an extra half-hour for tour to start - I think they were selling tickets to extra people arriving via train even though we'd pre booked for a specific start time. Once tour started it all ran smoothly

It's a popular and busy site. With a guide - best parts can be seen in a few hours. Self guided and queue for entry would likely need the best part of a day. There's a lovely picnic area - you can bring your own snacks in. Very little protection from the elements- be prepared for the weather conditions.

The place is incredible and very big. In this tour you only cover half of it , so if you want to allow more time to stay and explore more on your own, we highly recommend it. Bring an umbrella or ponchos just in case of inclement weather.

Be early. They start the tour early if everyone is there. Don't go to the toilet if they say you have time - you don't. Watch for where the tour guide is. If you have the little ticket voucher then when you go through keep walking past the glass booth you will see the turnstiles. This wasn't clear to us.

We hired scooters so we had autonomy on arrival and departure which was a challenge but achievable. Take a LOT if water and a fan if possible as was a very hot day. Sneakers were essential as terrain was rough/bumpy most of the way. Jandals/sandals not recommended.

We had booked a trainitalia train from Naples to Pompeii & a bus transfer to the site. Big mistake. I took a guided tour from Rome by bus on my first visit, and took the train from Rome on my second. I highly recommend taking an organized tour from Rome with a group if you can possibly manage it. By car from Naples center (Apcoa urban parking). Off season it was okay to go to Pompeji by car. Nice big parking spaces in the shadow were available. But generally I would not recommend to go to Naples by car. Especially not if you have a big car. We went in our 7-seater and parking and traffic in Naples center has been a bit of a nightmare Traffic is really crazy and parking places assume that you have a small car.

We found it super easy to get to Pompeii. We took the train from Naples and found the train station very quaint and easy to manage. The directions for the meeting point were spot on with the picture and map access. Only complaint was not having any air conditioning on the train back to Naples nothing you can control

Alfonso was our guide and he was excellent - charming, funny and knowledgeable. He had very good English and switched to French when he heard some other tourists asking questions. We visited the site on an overcast day in February and it was uncrowded and easy to see everything. I can imagine that in summer it would be very crowded and difficult to get around, and that a skip-the-line ticket would be well worth the money. Pompeii was a bucket list item for me and I am so glad we went - it was fascinating. I was happy with the price of this tour as other operators had quoted us absolutely ridiculous prices - we ended up travelling by local train from Sorrento and even with the skip the line surcharge (which as it turns out we didn't really need on the day), this was a very reasonably priced option.

I had a great time on the tour to Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi. Our guide was excellent, everything ran smoothly, and I’d highly recommend it. I especially loved the short boat journey from Amalfi—it was an optional extra but absolutely worth it. The only downside was that my friend’s booking didn’t go through due to a credit card issue, which took a while to resolve. Otherwise, a fantastic experience!

At the office near the station. The guide was really good. However, instructions on how to find your office to meet up were not that good. We didn't realise it was just outside the station.

This was badly organised and I had to wander around seeking advice until I happened upon the man who was gathering the tour together. When, eventually introduced to our guide, she instantly took charge, provided and excellent tour, with intelligent comments throughout and an easy, lucid presentation style, and a huge understanding of her audience's needs. A wonderful guide making up for a somewhat shambolic gathering of the participants by the organisers.

I would recommend the guide to prepare tickets for those people who had a voucher, this took extra time. The guide was good, easy to understand. The mic and headphones worked great.

We was there early because we knew trafic and parking can take time so we waited about 30 minutes and there actually wasn´t any long queue so I don´t think we saved so much time but since we drove about 2 hours to get to Pompei it felt good to know we got tickes and a guide booked the day before so we would not drive and discover none availble or something like that.
