What to See in Herculaneum
The remains of Herculaneum were almost perfectly preserved under the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius. While there’s plenty to explore and observe at Herculaneum, here are the top sites you should definitely visit.
House of Neptune
This site, located a little further from the House of the Charred Furniture, was created as a tribute to the gods Neptune and Amphitrite. One can notice a a courtyard and alcove here, along with the remains of a fountain. The primary attraction here is the stunning glass mosaic wall with marble masks over it. The mosaic was designed with vivid colors and intricate patterns featuring the gods.
Villa of the Papyri
Considered one of the most magnificent villas in Herculaneum, this site gained fame due to the discovery of numerous papyrus scrolls -- mysterious sheets of illegible text. Its stunning architecture is still identifiable with the multiple frescoes, marble sculptures and bronzes that were discovered. It is thought to once have a vineyard and gardens, and a direct view of the sea from its terraces.
Thermae (Baths)
The thermal baths date back to the 1st Century BC. They clearly demarcate separate areas for men and women. Once can still identify how the water was heated by a large, still-intact furnace. Notice the changing rooms, the different hot and cold abthing areas, and even the storage areas for clothing. All these areas are covered with mosaic patterns and depictions of dolphins and other sea creatures.
Hall of the Augustales
Devotees of Emperor Augustus’ cult met here for their meetings and marked it as their official seat. Once can still easily identify the various columns and arches in this square, and the opening in the roof that lights up the room. It is also marked by various frescos, famous ones portraying Hercules wrestling Achelous and another where he enters Mount Olympus, accompanied by Juno and Minerva.
Samnite House
From all the excavation projects, the Samnite House was identified as one of the oldest aristocratic residences in Herculaneum. It is thought to have been constructed back in 2nd Century BC and was about 300 years old when Mount Vesuvius erupted. Its Greek-influenced atrium, painted in the Fourth Style is famous here. Once can also observe its beautiful flooring, rainwater pool, and still-standing columns and pillars.
House of the Deer
On this spot, one can find another grand villa in Herculaneum, facing the oceanside. It was elaborately designed with two floors surrounding a large courtyard and garden. These were decorated with statues of deers and large marble tables that one can find in the on-site museum as well. Notice the unique flooring of this villa, as it is covered with intricate mosaics, frescos and marble chips.
